Yar'Adua Urged to Regulate Imported Products
This Day

17 June 2007
President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has been advised to ensure the regulation of the influx of low quality goods and services from neighbouring African countries into the nation in order to stabilise the nation's locally produced products. Executive Director, Sales and Marketing, Doyin Group of Companies, Princess Omolola Olobayo stated this in Ilorin on while speaking to newsmen.
She added that the influx of good from these African countries have constituted serious hazard to the health condition of the residents as majority of them are of very poor standard. According to her, it was disheartening that some of the products being imported to our country are not properly regulated and this has continued to affect the development of the nation's locally industries. She said "unlike goods that are being produced in Nigeria which NAFDAC, SON and so on have been saddled with the task to ensure that they are of good and quality standard, the products being imported into Nigeria through the border areas are not regulated".
Olabayo added, "since the Federal Government has opened our doors to these African countries, some of the products, we have through the borders are being sold in our open markets are of very poor quality, the dangerous aspect of it is that they come cheap with beautiful packaging, but they are of serious threat to the health condition of Nigerians and I think the federal government, should regulate them so that we wont unnecessarily endanger the lives of our people."
"Can you imagine that our own products are being seriously screened by NAFDAC which is very good for us," she continued. "Look at the pure water case too, but I wonder why the government is not considering the quality of these products, they should do so before the situation gets out of hand." She was worried that the situation if not checked urgently would wreck havoc as some of the imported products from the neighbouring African countries come cheaper compared to similar products being produced in Nigeria. Olobayo however, appealed to the new administration of president Yaradua to take an urgent step on this ugly situation so as to enhance the economic growth of the nation and most importantly to protect the lives of the less privileged people in the society.
