Falcons Open with Draw
17th Nov. '08
Ifeanyi Chiejine saved Nigeria's blushes with a late equaliser, three minutes from time, as the Super Falcons were held to a 1-1 draw by Ghana in their opening game of the 6th African Women Championships in Equatorial Guinea. Florence Okoe stunned the Falcons with a long drive to give the Black Queens the lead.
The Super Falcons, whose first loss to African opposition was against the Queens back in 2002, fought to get back in the game, but were denied time and again by veteran goalkeeper Memunatu Suleimana. It was left to Chiejine to pull the Falcons chestnuts from the fire. She latched onto a long threaded pass to beat Suleimana and earn the Falcons a share of the points. Hosts Equatorial Guinea shocked Cameroon 1-0 in the opening game of the tournament in Malabo.
