Lagos State Govt. launches Initiative for Land Restoration
29th April '08
Lagos State government has launched an initiative for the restoration of land lost to coastal erosion since 1905. The EKO Atlantic City project is to provide a "permanent solution" to erosion by building a robust sea wall along the newly-reconstituted coastline." Commissioner for Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructural Development, Segun Oniru disclosed that the overall area to be reclaimed will be 820 hectares or 8,200,000m2. The length of the development is 6,500m and on average of 1,260m wide.
Furthermore, he explained that the western boundary of the development is the East Mole constructed between 1905 and 1908 to protect the Lagos Harbour entrance. The proposed Eko Atlantic City, Oniru stated will be sited on the reclaimed land area covering 8,000,000 square metres (which is approximately 40 percent larger then the present Victoria Island).
