Wapco-Lafarge Donates Library, Books

In a bid to boost the development of education in Ogun State, West Africa Portland Cement Company, (WAPCO-LAFARGE) has donated a library and books worth millions of naira to schools in Sagamu Council area of the state.

At the presentation of the books and library, held in Sagamu, the Companyís Head of Communication Department, Mrs. Tope Oguntokun, who represented the Managing Director, Mr. George Durando, said it was the company is policy to take corporate social responsibility seriously. She said the library, would in no small measure improve the reading culture among the students of the host community, adding that education was the best legacy to bequeath children as leaders of tomorrow.

Chairman of Sagamu Community Development Committee, Asiwaju Solomon Kayode Onafowokan OON, said the citing of the library in a serene environment was premised on the need to rise to the challenge of reading culture, which he observed was at its lowest ebb across the country.

He enjoined the beneficiary community to ensure that the books donated are judiciously used by the pupils and not to be diverted to the homes of political Appointees. He said this was why the books were embrossed with "LAFARGE". Onafowokan, commended the company for living up to its corporate responsibility, charging it not to rest on its oars in doing more for the host community.

The Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Michael Adeniyi Sonariwo also thanked WAPCO-LAFARGE for the gesture. He recalled that he and his colleagues studied in hardship during his schools days, with 20 to 40 children sleeping in the library because there was no where else to read. He therefore charged parents and guardians to encourage their wards to make use of the library, rather than allowing them to engage in cult activities.

The Monarch also advised that a roaster on the use of the library should be drawn, so as to ensure its proper maintenance. Power generating set should also be provided to make the library conducive for use.
