Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) has called on Nigerian experts in Diaspora with specialisation in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to join the drive for the development of the Nigerian University System.
NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, made the call recently in Abuja. who said NUC's drive to reposition the system for the challenges of making Nigeria one of the 20 largest economies in the world by 2020 would make the system to focus attention on areas of priority in the nation's economy.
Okojie who spoke on the repackaged "Linkage with Experts and Academics in the Diaspora (LEADS)", said the aim is also to attract the experts to focus on Management Science and Business Administration.
Other areas of focus according to him include Mathematics, Medicine and Dentistry, Mining Engineering and Natural Sciences as well as Oil and Gas Engineering. Okojie reiterated that the programme was designed to encourage relocation of experts in various disciplines to Nigeria, on a short term basis. "It is also designed to enable the nation to tap from the huge human resources of Nigerian origin outside the country for the improvement of the delivery of university education", he explained.
He further stated that the initiative was meant to encourage experts in the industry to participate in teaching and research in Nigerian universities. Experts and Academicians under the programme will be expected to spend a period of three to 12 months in any Nigerian university of the their choice.
The programme which was first launched during the tenure of Prof. Peter Okebukola, the immediate past Executive Secretary of NUC, is aimed at promoting Research and Development.
