Today, the Maryland Court of Appeals ruled that a Maryland statute declaring that marriage must be between a man and a woman does not violate the Constitution. Dr. James Pelura, Chairman of the Maryland Republican Party, released the following statement: ?Today?s ruling that protecting the sanctity of marriage is constitutional is welcome news. Thirty four years ago, the Maryland General Assembly declared marriage to be between a man and a woman. While the special interests tried to persuade the courts to get involved, the Court of Appeals rightly ruled that this important policy matter belongs in the legislature, not the courts.
