Power Summit for Uyo On Dec 12-14

A three-day summit for operators in the power sector, tagged the second Nigerian power business leaders summit, comes up at Ibom Golf Resort, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State between December 12 and 14, 2007.

The summit, packaged by PowerCap Limited, a manpower development and outsourcing services provider, is aimed at creating opportunity for leaders in the power and energy sectors of the economy to be updated on sector development and to compare notes on opportunities and challenges.

The managing director of PowerCap, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye said the forum is quite compelling as it would build on the gains of the maiden edition and previous successful power sector capacity building initiative held at Obudu Cattle Ranch, United Kingdom and Abuja.

Ogunleye noted that the deregulation of the Nigerian power market is exposing sector leaders and operators to new market structures, transaction dynamics and operating risks.

According to him, power is the cornerstone of which the nation would need to build its industrial development and vision 2020 just like telecommunication is moving from the realm of an engineering solution to a business with very high information content, hence the need for the forum.

Besides the networking opportunities, he noted that the programme would include group-based learning, cases and experience sharing session as it would immediately give participants the opportunity to put into practice how best to manage their businesses in a deregulated environment by impacting system-view evaluation and problem solving skills.

Specifically, the managing director explained that the forum is designed for those interested in playing active roles in the deregulated electricity market as they would update their management skills, understand the workings of the new regulatory environment; how to deal with it effectively; have a better understanding of risks arising from new trading opportunities and how to manage them as well as address the fundamental generation, transmission and distribution issues that hinder achieving a zero black out culture in the country.

Dignitaries expected at the occasion include the governor of Akwa Ibom state, Chief Godswill Akpabio, minister of state for energy (power) Mrs. Fatima Balaraba Ibrahim, chairman of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Ransome Owan and special adviser to the president on power, Mr,. Joseph Makoju.
