Following the accumulated cargoes arising from the four-day nationwide strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has set up a task force to fast-track the clearance of goods at the ports.

While the strike lasted, vessels' arrival at the seaports, especially the premier one at Apapa, Lagos continued unabated. This has resulted in the accumulation of a yet-to-be ascertained quantity of consignments at the nation's seaports.

In a statement issued in Lagos yesterday, the Managing Director, NPA, Western Ports, Lagos Mallam Abdulsallam Mohammed, said the task force was meant to facilitate the clearance of cargoes at the seaports after the strike.

The task force which has already started work, according to the statement, which was signed by the Assistant General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr. Musa Iliya, is to "ensure and enforce" the smooth movement of traffic in and out of the Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports, Lagos.

"This is in line with the Federal Ministry of Transportation's desire for the immediate resumption of port activities. The Task force is headed by General Manager, Operations and Commercial Services, Alhaji Mohammed Bulangu. Other members are the General Manager Security/Safety, Col S.A.Folorunsho, Terminal Coordinator, Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Mr. E. A. Egharevba, Terminal Coordinator, Tin Can Island Port (TCIP), Mr. Joshua Asanga, Assistant General Manager Public Affairs, Musa Iliya, Captain B.A Jerome of Harbours Department", the statement added.

Also included in the committee is the Representative of the Nigerian Navy, Head of Operations, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr. Habu Dauada, Zonal Head of LASTMA, Mr. Agbeniyi, Representative of NUPENG, Customs Comptrollers of Lagos and Tin Can Island Ports, Divisional Police Officers Lagos and Tin Can Island Ports, Area B Command Trinity Police Station, Caretakers of Apapa and Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area and Representatives of Depot and Petroleum Product Marketers Association (DPPMA).

The Managing Director urges Terminal Operators, Clearing and Shipping Agents, Trailer Operators, stakeholders and the general public to cooperate with the task force to ensure a hitch-free exercise. The task force will remain in force until operations at the ports return to its normal state.
