One thing I am constantly being reminded of on a daily basis is the mercy of God. If there is anything that keeps coming up in my prayer of thanksgiving daily, it is the mercy of God. I take a look back into my past and I know that had God not intervened into my situation, I would not be where I am today and I would not be enjoying the benefits of His mercy.
Speaking generally, we could look at different scenarios of what might have been. What if God's emphasis is on judgment rather than mercy? For me, the answer is obvious, I never could have made it through, and I say that with absolute certainty.
What if Christ is not full of mercy and grace? In the first place, He would not have left His glorious throne above to die for you and I. He would not be presently making intercession for us as we press on in faith in this present world.
Many times, people have asked me the question, "why does God allow some people to get away with their wickedness while others suffer as a result of their actions?" I do not have all the answers but I am sure that it has to do with the mercy of God.
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved) Eph 2:4-5
From the above verse, we can see that mercy and love go hand in hand. They are like Siamese twins. You cannot show mercy except the love of God is in you. Mercy is not pity. Someone having pity on another does not do anything but wonders why the sufferer is in such a dilemma and wishes that the person finds relief. The merciful person feels for the sufferer and shares the burden and the pain. He seeks to reduce or eliminate the cause of the suffering through means available to Him.
The mercy of God is so deep it is a wonder so many of us can't understand it. It makes one wonder why some people could steal in the church, in the very presence of God, and get away with it unperturbed. Others kill with impunity as if the have a God-given right to snuff life out of others. There are times, I have wondered what I would do if God delegated power to me for a period of time. I know without pretence, that there would be some specific people I would have sent to their graves for the wicked acts they had committed against others. Thankfully, this will not happen because I am myself a beneficiary of His grace and mercy.
I was listening to a song, "Mercy Saw Me" in the Woman Thou Art Loose Album. A part of the song says; "the justice of God saw what I had done, but mercy saw me through the Son". I thought about it and said, "That is very true, left for the judgment of God, I would be doomed because I never could satisfy the requirements of the law."
I read somewhere that, "Mercy met our misery; grace, our guilt". That mercy could reach us at all proves its fullness. His mercy is infinite, that is, it is limitless and endless.
