Idiagbon's WAI

One thing I recollect vividly in the days of Idiagbon was the no-nonsense attitude towards uncleanliness. You dare not drop trash anywhere, peeing anywhere was a taboo except you wish to sacrifice ya long john (men were usually the culprits) and make it an object of discussion in the lower courts, companies were compelled to plan for trash resulting from their products...

Fast forward to 2009 and Fashola (and of course all other well meaning governors) is still having headache over refuse collection and keeping Lagos clean.

In Nigeria, I never was aware of sidewalks (hawkers, sellers, trash usually would have takken over where they still exist) until I travelled out. But once I returned, I made it a point of duty to use it. Same goes for the act of dumping my trash anywhere which I learned in Secondary School. As a rule, trash is for trash cans as weewee is for toilet! (Exceptions fit dey for bush camping)

If all those who have learned the culture of cleanliness (either by force or by inclination) can just carry on while at home or when they return home, honestly we can begin to impact on the uncleanliness which is not traditionally a Nigerian thing. But what do we see, once the plane flies over Oshodi (or wherever) and we step into the warm welcoming airport, we throw caution to the wind and begin to do stuff we dare not do abroad.

Imototo lo le segun arun gbogbo... cleanliness is key to solving some health concerns. We can begin with us.
