Holding Our Nigerian Governors & Officials AccountableHolding Our Nigerian Governors & Other Officials Accountable
| Quote: | | Obasanjo yesterday challenged Nigerians to ask their governors and local government chairmen to justify the huge allocations that accrued to them in the past two years. - 2005 |
I agree that we should ask our governors how all these funds have been applied. So, how do we begin? We all know that most of these governors are neither up to the tasks they have been elected for, nor are they carrying out the tasks they were entrusted with.
We're all aware of the stories, so there's no need to reiterate them here,
but in order to put a cessation to their incompetence, disregard for governance and outright illegal atrocities, how do we garner our resources (minds and intellect) together to effectively communicate our dissatisfaction; while simultaneously working to capture and bring to justice those who flaunt their duties by serving their personal needs and greed?
Yes, there's all the talk about transparency, and we're aware that the EFCC is doing the best it capably can to monitor and arrest corruption, but we as civilians need to more actively participate in ensuring that the corruption that filters down from the top ceases.
I believe one of the means of doing this is by actively reporting any and all provable atrocities we're aware of, to the appropriate authorities who can effectively investigate and prosecute them.
I believe such action should not be limited only to the governors, but should also include any government elected officials, be they be senators, ministers, civil servants or any others who have been elected to represent the interests of Nigeria and Nigerians.
It is a shame when some citizens of Nigeria shamefully call for immunity from prosecution for governors like that of Bayelsa who was arrested in England for laundering Nigeria's government funds misappropriated as his own. Equally shameful is the action of those who have quickly forgotten the actions of IBB and the suffering it caused Nigerians, and now want him to govern Nigeria a second time.
Such mentality of defending and cheering on criminals and people of disreputable character needs to be changed, beginning with the mindset of those who have been indoctrinated into such behaviour, and furthermore by prosecution and elimination, rather than heroic worshipping of people who commit such atrocities.
