Governor Sambo Wants Employment for Athletes

Kaduna state governor, Namadi Sambo has urged state governments to offer jobs to athletes to curb unemployment in the country. Sambo who made the call at the ongoing National Handball Open Championship in Kaduna, said that sports had become a big industry and the world's largest employer of labour.

"Sports has become one of the world's largest employer of labour and Nigeria should not be an exception in this regard. "There are thousands of young and well talented men and women in various sports without jobs across the country.

"These youths have been used by various states to participate in competitions and were paid next to nothing as allowances. They are usually thrown to unemployment market after such competitions.

"Our athletes should be employed and provided opportunities to build careers while still competing. They should have permanent and pensionable jobs," said

Sambo, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Yakubu Bitiyong, noted that sports had gone beyond mere recreation and was now big business the world over.

"The world has become a global village and sports the world over is now a big employer of labour and money spinner.

"Our private organisations and multi-national companies should as a matter of urgency invest in sports development in the country, not only in football but also in other sports," Sambo said.

He said Kaduna would host more national competitions as part of the state's preparations towards the 15th National Sports Festival slated for next April.

Mark Jacob, the first vice-president of Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), however, thanked the Kaduna State Government for sponsoring the championships and called on corporate organisations to assist the federation.

Fifteen male and 10 female teams are taking part in the championships which began on ends this weekend.

This is the reason, people should never take education for granted while pursuing other interests. Always plan for your future and consider everything else a bonus. A back-up plan is always crucial when one is pursuing any career or venture.
