Plumbers in the Federal Capital Territory, have come together under the umbrella of Professional Plumbers Association of Abuja to ensure that quacks are not allowed to operate in the territory. Chairman of the association, Mr Amos Abeni Omiyi, in a chat with LEADERSHIP, recently, said the association was set to sensitise and regulate the activities of plumbers in the capital city.

To this end, he said a rally has been slated for February 21, with a view to alerting members of the public and reposition the association for better service delivery. The association, according to Amos, now has over 50 registered members, stressing that "people keep coming and calling me on phone on how to get registered".

He continued, "We have many quacks just like any other professional body, but we are poised to sanitise the profession. Plumbing is a noble profession, but because people do not understand this, they treat us with little dignity. And this is the impression we want to change henceforth."We must be treated as professionals like our counterparts in other parts of the world. Our activities touch on both the ministry and the law. We ensure that water system of public and residential buildings are in good working condition. And this is something that is essential to human existence and so, why should we not be recognised as professionals", he queried.

"For one to be registered as a member, one must possess a Grade 1 Trade Test certificate. But in a situation where one does not possess this, but is skilled, we shall take him to training and later certify him as a professional which will authomatically qualify him as a member", he stressed.

The association, according to Amos, has a fully staffed office, but is in dire need of finance, hence, " I am calling on all stakeholders to come to our aid for us to ensure that quality water runs in the FCT", he maintained.
