Nasarawa state government has distributed relief materials worth millions of Naira to the victims of the recent flood disaster that submerged farmlands belonging to over forty families in Farin Ruwa development area of Nasarawa state.

The materials were distributed by the state relief committee at the Farin Ruwa development area secretariat, where affected victims assembled to collect the materials which included 200 bags of maize, 200 bags of rice, 100 bags of guinea corn, and 100 bags of millet. Two functional boreholes were also constructed by the state government to help in the supply of potable drinking water as the flood has washed away the streams the affected villages used for consumption and other domestic purposes.

Speaking during the occasion, chairman of the relief committee and director, personnel management, Farin Ruwa development area, Mr. Aghai Inji said that government decided to distribute the materials as relief to the victims, after seeing their pathetic condition due to the loss of their farm lands. Inji said the relief materials, are welfare packages and not compensation adding that government was committed to the welfare of its citizens. He maintained that everything possible will be done to help affected victims with more relief materials.

Also speaking, a representative of the victims, Reverend Luka Maichibi appealed to the state government to fulfill its promise of compensating victims of the flood disaster, which was caused as a result of the construction of the Independent Power Plant embarked upon by the state government in the area.

Reverend Maichibi also thanked the state government for their kind gesture saying that the relief material is a welcome development as it will go a long way in assisting farmers who are not likely to record any harvest this year, due to the submerging of their farm lands as a result of the flood. The materials were distributed to over 197 victims, whose farms were submerged as a result of the on- going Independent Power Plant construction in the area.

Already the victims of two local government areas numbering over 500 in Calabar South and Calabar municipal have received the relief materials including bags of cement, blankets, plastic buckets, mattresses, towels, and bags of rice. Some landlords and ladies whose houses collapsed as a result of flood were given five bags of cement including other relief materials. Others were each given plastic buckets, foam, towels, while two families shared a bag of 50 kilogram bag of rice.

Our correspondent who monitored the distribution by Cross River State Emergency Relief Agency (SEMA) Tuesday, October 2 observed that the beneficiaries were full of praises to the state government and appeal that the distribution should be made regularly to cushion the effect of disasters in the state. Speaking in an exclusive interview, the executive secretary SEMA, Chief Vincent Aqua explained that the distribution of cement and other building materials as well as food stuffs and mattresses and buckets was to mitigate in the effect of the flood recorded last year and 2007.

He said in June the state witnessed heavy down pour and storm which affected hundreds of families across the state. "Thousands of families were rendered homeless as their houses were washed away by heavy flood. We ,that is SEMA immediately went into action with a view to saving souls and reduce hardship, inspected those houses and families and extended our heartfelt sympathy to them. The state governor, Senator Liyel Imoke equally went round some of the affected areas hence approval was given for the purchase and distribution of relief materials, this government is people friendly and we cannot allow our people to suffer for a long time when any disaster occurred".
