26 June 2007
A member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Abike Dabiri, has urged state governors to consider the issue of gender in their appointment. Dabiri stated this while leading prominent politicians and leaders of Ikorodu on a courtesy visit to newly appointed Secretary to Lagos State Government, Mrs Aderele Ogunsanya.
She also urged governors to emulate Lagos State government by appointing women to positions of authority. The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, also has a woman as his deputy, while Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mrs Adefunmilayo Tejuosho is a woman.
Dabiri said appointment of women into sensitive positions would create stability, transparency and peace, which are paramount to national development. She said "women appointed to positions of authority have distinguished themselves", saying "when men will be talking fire for fire, women will be saying water for fire."
She said the appointment of Ogunsanya was a blessing to the people of Ikorodu. According to her, many people have argued that Ikorodu wanted her to be the governor, but this new position is a good one for the people. She said Ogunsanya is capable of bringing about the desired development to the people of Lagos State.
While reacting, Ogunsanya commended the people for deeming it fit to visit her and assured them that she would use her experience to bring credibility to the office. She said the people should thank Fashola and Senator Bola Tinubu for considering Ikorodu worthy of such appointment and commended Dabiri for giving quality representation to the people at the House of Representatives.
