The federal operations unit, zone "A" of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) in the year ended 2007, impounded 2,302 contrabands worth N4.94 billion.
The seizures include textile materials and garments which amounted to 50 percent of the total goods impounded, 20 percent as vehicles, 10 percent rice, vegetable oil five percent and others made up 15 percent.
According to a press statement signed by Rasheed Taiwo the Controller of the command and made available to Vanguard, the N4.94 billion raked in last year is N59 million more than that gotten the previous year. Taiwo, according to the statement also recorded 771 more seized items than that of 2006.
The federal operations unit which is the anti-smuggling arm of the Customs, impounded a total of 1,745 units of vehicles valued at N745,610,000.00, with a duty of N172,025,00.00 and duty paid value N917,635,000.00.
As value, duty and duty paid value which amounted to N1,779,925,698.00, N355,000,721.00, and N2,134,928,219.00 respectively from various types of textile materials impounded in 2007.
The command also during the year under view impounded second hand clothing which includes 632 bales, 277 wraps and 11 sacks and parboiled rice consisting of 22,973 bags of 50 kg and 20 bags of 25 kg, with a total of N11,094,745.00, N2,176,987.00 and N13,271,732.00 as value, duty and duty paid value respectively.
From 9,655 jerry cans of 25 liters, 760 jerry cans, 257 jerry cans of 10 liters and others of vegetable oil and N33,801,400.00, N6,911,900.00 and N40,713,300.00 as value, duty and duty paid value respectively.
The command according to its boss, seized a total of 679 cartons of poultry products and 395 pieces of used fridges and compressors which has N2,037,000.00, N407,400.00, N2,444,400.00 and N4,044,000.00, N1,683,000.00 and N5,727,000.00, as value, duty and duty paid value respectively.
As value, duty and duty paid value on other general goods such Echolac boxes, suit cases, accessories of furniture, footwear, shovels, etc as impounded in 2007, added up to N169,592,086.00, N33,964,623.00 and N203,556,709.00 respectively.
