The Consumers Protection Council (CPC), has vowed to rid Alaba International Market in Lagos of all substandard electrical and electronic appliances. To this end, the council said a joint task force of its staff and traders in Alaba had been constituted to stamp out the menace of fake and substandard electrical and electronic appliances from the market.
A statement by the CPC yesterday in Abuja said the decision to sanitise Alaba of substandard products was the outcome of a meeting held by CPC Director General, Mrs Ify Umenyi and Alaba traders. The statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the meeting discussed rising incident of fake appliances and its negative impact on consumers. It added that it was because of complaints received from producers and distributors of such appliances.
According to the statement, CPC officers have previously embarked on surveillance operation which showed the extent of sharp practices in the market. "The operation arose from information CPC received on counterfeiting and selling of fake products in the market," it said. Umenyi warned traders in Alaba not to engage in unethical and unwholesome practices such as counterfeiting of existing brands. Umenyi urged them to produce and promote their own genuine brands.
The CPC boss said that the council would ensure that Nigerians get value for the money spent on products and services. "Counterfeiting could result into shortchanging of consumers," the statement said.
The statement said that Chief Emeka Dike, Executive Chairman of the Market Association, expressed worries at the unwholesome practices of some of his members. He pledged to collaborate with CPC in ensuring that Alaba was rid of all substandard appliances.
"CPC and the executive of Alaba International market association have resolved to set up 25-man joint committee that will embark on the immediate confiscation of all substandard appliances in the market," the statement said. (NAN)
