Calling for Opportunities to Partake in Problem Solving

Sometimes solutions are harder or slower to come by because people who may be crucial to helping find are excluded from decision making processes. It is therefore pertinent that all resources available, including human resources be properly utilized in finding viable solutions to existing or recurring problems.

N-Delta Women Forum Wants Stolen Funds Returned From Europe

The Niger Delta Women's Forum has called on European countries to show sensitivity to the plight of the region by returning ill-gotten wealth stolen from the region now lodged in European bank vaults. The group in a communiqué at the end of a two-day pre conference meeting held in Abuja last week also called for an upward increase of the 13% derivation allocation accruable to oil producing States for the purpose of implementing people oriented projects in the region.

The communiqué signed by the group's National Coordinator, Dr. Esther Uduehi and Publicity Secretary, Dr. Becky Ketebu-Igwe also called for the setting up of a Niger Delta Development Bank which it said would "be the fulcrum for the development and reconstruction of the area."

While appreciating recent initiatives by stakeholders focused on the region, the forum nevertheless called for the full inclusion of women in the programmes, portraying it as the "gender mainstreaming of the plans and programmes for the development of the area." The forum further asserted that having "greater involvement of the women of the Niger Delta in finding solutions to the problems in line with the Beijing Plan for Action of which Nigeria is a signatory."

The communiqué issued by the forum read in part: "We call on the Oil and Gas Companies to give more opportunities to the host communities to participate in their activities and consult more with them in finding solutions to any problem arising from the community. We call the various institutions and companies to partner with the Niger Delta Women's Forum to mobilize the women of the area and get them better involved in helping to stop the endemic problem of hostage taking and other acts of criminality or conflict."

The forum further noted that the problems of the region can neither be resolved through militancy or forceful actions by the Military.
