Governor Olusegun Agagu of Ondo state has assured workers in the state of a better deal, particularly in terms of welfare and implementation of the new salary structure for them as soon as the committee set up for that purpose by the state government conclude its assignment.
He also commended the organized Labour for suspending its four-day strike in the interest of the generality of Nigerians especially the poor masses who faced untold hardship in such times.
According to the Information and Orientation Commissioner, Chief Eddy Olafeso, the governor, who believes nothing was wrong for workers in the state to join their colleagues nationwide to address issues pertinent to their well-being and welfare of Nigerians, expressed readiness to always protect the interest of the state workforce.
He advised civil servants to continue to be diligent at their duty posts with a view to taking the state to the desired higher heights, adding that the governor would, in the next four years, continue with programmes and policies that would better their lots. These, he said, included training, retraining and provision of other necessary incentives that would improve their quality of mind and standard of living.
While debunking rumours that the Agagu administration would retrench workers, Olafeso said that rather, plans were in the offing to employ additional workers, just as arrangements had been concluded on the recruitment of 2000 secondary school teachers. He said that Agagu did not reduce the workforce in the last four years and has no plan to sack anybody in the next four years.
"What matters and what should be the focus of all workers is putting in their best to ensure that the administration's key mission of expanding the economic base of the state comes to fruition. This is necessary as it has the capability of opening up opportunities for job and wealth creation. That is what we need for now," he said.
