The federal government has concluded plans to upgrade facilities and automate systems at major airports in the country to help get passengers through the airport and onto planes quicker.
Minister of Transportation, Mrs.Deziani Alison-Madueke, who disclosed this yesterday while inspecting facilities at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, said the expansion of Lagos airport will reduce congestion currently being experienced at the airport.
The minister explained that she decided to see things for herself in order to identify areas requiring urgent attention.
She said, "we have to do something to upgrade the value of the actual travel experience for Nigerian consumers, and that has to do with the physical aspect in our terminal building. We obviously have to do some sort of expansion at the Murtala Muhammed Airport."
She noted that there was need to cut down on travel experience simultaneously with a certain level of expansion allowing passengers to cut down on travel time. Passengers have been experiencing harrowing times at the Lagos airport following congestion at the premier airport. Both the security area and departure terminal are congested, leading to loss of time in passenger facilitation.
According to her, "we are going to automate our system to cut down on the time it takes to actually walk through Customs, which will be decreased if we have a second screening section in the airport. Therefore, the airport expansion will be holistic."
Speaking on lack of fiscal allocation to aviation agencies, Madueke stated that the issue of funds is one major problem facing the sector, adding "we have a lot of parameters which we cannot go. However, all uncompleted projects should be completed before the end of the year".
She lamented that some critical equipment such as power generation should be given priority so that airports are consistently supplied with the requisite level of power to prevent fluctuation and prevent the instrument from breaking down.
Alison-Madueke inspected facilities at the Lagos airport including the recently refurbished control tower and the new radar at the airport and later went to Kano to inspect facilities there.
