Determined to put the problem of bed spacing in the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching hospital Zaria (ABUTH), management and Board of the hospital will be spending close to 130 million between 2006-2007.
Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Ibrahim Abdu Aguye who disclosed this while refuting BBC Hausa service report that the hospital is deteriorating, said one of the biggest challenges facing the hospital is bed spacing.
In his words, Block K of the hospital has been completed with 350 beds, while the second half of Block X has Ben estimated to cost about N500 million, adding that in 2006 the sum of N70 million was used to provide additional bed space in the hospital.
"With the installation of VAMED Engineering equipment to boost the services in the hospital, we are progressing. A lot of improvement has taken place, and 95 percent of the equipments are working perfectly.
"We have a lot of challenges, raging from water, electricity, space among others. The problem of bed spacing is currently being handled. For instance, between 2006 to 2007, we will be spending close to N130 million. This will give us bigger bed capacity.
"Block K has been completed with 350 beds. Our estimate for second half of Block X as of last year for completion is about N500 million. So currently from 2006 we were given the sum of N70 million to provide the additional bed space. I assure you that by the end of this year, the problem of bed spacing in this hospital will be a history.
"The hospital is not going down the drain as reported. We are doing our best to satisfy our patients. We also make sure that the staffs are paid their salary on time. So we are making progress, even though the demand is much, but we are taking care of issues one after the other."
