Country Will Remain in the Vanguard for Peace in W/Africa - President Yar'Adua

President Umaru Musa Yar'adua has given an assurance that under his leadership; Nigeria will continue to play a leading role in promoting peace and political stability in the West African sub-region.
The president who stated this while speaking at bilateral talks with a Togolese Government delegation led by President Faure Gnassingbe, on September 10 in Abuja, said that his Administration will do everything within its powers to ensure that the relative peace now existing in the sub-region is maintained and built upon. "We must not allow fresh disruptions of the peace in West Africa," he said.
He also reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to the co-prosperity zone established with Togo and Benin Republic, adding that he expected the next summit of the group to, among other things, adopt a coordinated approach to curb the illegal traffic in small arms within the zone.
President Yar'adua also promised that the Federal Government would expedite action to ensure the completion of the West African Gas Pipeline Project in the shortest possible time in the knowledge that its early completion will help to solve the energy problems being experienced by Togo and other neighbouring countries.
President Gnasssingbe thanked President Yar'adua for the warm and brotherly reception according his delegation, and spoke of his desire to build on the cordial relationship between Togo and Nigeria established under his father, the late President Gnassingbe Eyadema.
He told President Yar'adua that Togo expected the West African Gas Pipeline to boost its power supply and would welcome its early completion. Both leaders also discussed the rescheduling of the postponed summit of the co-prosperity zone.
