Oklng to Produce 1m Tonnes of Cooking Gas Yearly

This Day
28th Jan. 2008

There are indications that scarcity and high cost of domestic cooking gas (LPG) will soon end, as the Olokola Liquified Natural Gas (OKLNG) Project plans to inject one million tonnes of the product, per annum, into domestic and export markets.

Speaking recently in Abuja, at a House of Representatives Forum on non-availability of cooking gas, OKLNG's Managing Director, Dr Funmi Coker, said the project will produce per annum, one million tonnes of cooking gas in its first and second phases.

He said the project is engineering into its designs, facilities to load cooking gas for domestic and export purposes. Coker said an LNG project "is a prospect of several years down the line and while the OKLNG project cannot solve the immediate problems of today, it is part of the plans as we move forward," adding that the project and its shareholders are working hard to overcome teething challenges and deliver the project within the window of 2013 plus.

In his opening address at the Roundtable, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Gas, Honourable Igor Aguma, said cooking gas must be available to all Nigerians if deforestation must be checked and challenged new oil and gas projects to intergrate LPG production into their systems.

In his remarks, NNPC's Group Managing Director, Mr Yar'Adua, listed the challenges of cooking gas availability and affordability to include vessels and tankage constraints, obsolesence of road tankers and gas cylinders, amongst others and invited the private sector to join government in overcoming the challenges. The OKLNG, owned by NNPC, Chevron, Shell, BG and some srategic investors, is located in the Olokola Free Trade Zone. It will purchase natural gas, process it into liquid form and sell it to shareholders (including NNPC), who will offtake them for export. NICOMA, an NNPC marine transport joint venture with Hyundai of Korea, is expected to benefit from the completion of the OKLNG and other gas projects, as it is expected to ship their products.
