Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has revealed the plan of his government to spend N15 billion on the construction of 15,000 classrooms in the next four years in order to meet the United Nations (UN) requirement of 50 students per classroom ratio.

Disclosing this in Ikeja at the weekend, when he hosted pupils of Yeolan Schools in Ijanikin area of Ojo, Badagry Expressway, Fashola said his regime would ensure that adequate budgetary provisions are made to ensure that the project is completed before the end of its tenure.

He told the pupils that massive rehabilitation of all dilapidated schools in the State would commence during the holiday period, adding that by the time the children resume school in September, they would have new schools and new benches waiting for them.

He informed that a novel pilot scheme of public nursery school would soon commence in the state. He said the public nursery schools would adopt the Montessori Method and would serve as a model for all existing nursery schools and further reinforce that public schools can compete with private schools. Fashola, who also promised to continue with the policy of free education, added that the State regards children as its greatest assets who can only be improved with good education.

While answering questions from the pupils, who inquired on qualifications to become a Governor, Fashola noted that the overriding rule is for them to acquire good education to position themselves for service to the people.

To buttress his point, Fashola gave examples of himself as a Lawyer; his predecessor, Bola Tinubu, whobis an accountant; former Governor of Ogun State Olusegun Osoba, who is a journalist; as well as the state Deputy Governor, Princess Sarah Sosan, who is a trained teacher.

The Governor urged the children to be partners in thequest to clean up Lagos State by engaging in thebcleaning of their schools and environment whilebcautioning brothers and sisters on the dangers of littering the environment.
