Vogts to Explain July Absence

Daily Champion
27 July 2007

Super Eagles coach Berti Vogts would have to explain to the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) his failure to come for the month of July.

The German's contract stipulates that he should spend a minimum of 10 days in the country, but the former Germany coach is not due to arrive Nigeria until July 31.

NFA spokesman Demola Olajire disclosed that the issue will be deliberated on at Sunday's board meeting.

"This is a clear violation of the terms of his contract," Olajire said, adding that the German did not communicate with the NFA that he would not be coming into the country in July. "He did not tell us he would not be coming in this month. What we know is that we are expecting him by 31 July and he will be here up till August 12 to attend the FA Cup Final and possibly stay for about a week longer."

Olajire admitted though that with top officials of the NFA away for most of July, it would have been tough on the coach but, insisted that there should have been some sort of communication. "Of course we admit that we had a lot of things going on at the time and the chairman and Secretary General were away for most of the time, but he should still have spoken to us.

"When the board meets on Sunday, I am sure that this issue will be discussed and Vogts will have to explain why he did not show up for the minimum 10 days as stipulated in his contract."

But Emeka Ezeala, Vogts Technical Assistant, explained to KICK OFF that his boss was actually working while in Europe, and added that with the Nigerian league not yet on, there was little the coach would do if he came to Nigeria.

"He has been traveling around and doing a lot of work, trying to arrange friendlies with some countries and negotiating for potential camping sites in Europe. Sometimes, even I cannot reach him. Besides, the people he should work with are all over Europe and the league has not started yet. "Also, almost all the NFA officials were not around for most of the month so who will he have been liaising with?"

Ezeala assured that Berti would be in Nigeria for nearly three weeks in August when there would be plenty of work to be done. "He will arrive in Nigeria at the end of July and stay for the FA Cup final on the 12 and also stay until the league kicks off, I think one week later. That time, there will be plenty of work for him to do."

Accountability is essential, especially when you are paid to be in a position of authority, so he should explain himself and be netted whatever penalty is necessary for violating the clearly stated terms of his contract. Enough of foreigners taking Nigeria and Nigeriansfor granted.

NFA Officially Fire Vogts

3/25/08

The Nigerian Football Association (NFA) have officially severed ties with former coach Berti Vogts after sending him a letter of Termination of Contract.. The German in fact left his post a month ago, but only now are things close to being signed and sealed. NFA spokesperson Ademola Olajire confirmed that the German had been sent a letter of termination earlier, which had expired earlier in the month. "Vogts had earlier been served with a 30-Day Notice of Termination, in line with the letter and spirit of the contract he signed with the NFA in London on 6th February 2007," Olajire said.

"The FA did not want to make any comment on the issue as we wanted to respect the confidentiality clause in the contract." According to the Chief Media Officer, the 61 year-old tactician was sacked for several reasons, including the dismal outing of the Nigerian side at the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana. "Vogts endangered his position with constant quarrels with his employers, snide remarks about the Nigerian federation and failure to take his team to the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana earlier in the year," he added. The Nigerian Football Association is expected to announce the name of the new head coach of the team very soon, and an indigenous managers seems to be what the FA seems to be searching for. Samson Siasia presently leads the list of local coaches that are presently in the race for the Nations highest soccer job.
