Sunday Awoniyi - The Aro of Arewa

The Aro of Mopa is a man packed with integrity. He is a politician of a different hue. He is the chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF). He is a Yoruba man (from Kogi state), but he presides over the interest and affairs of the Hausa/Fulani people. He had worked and associated so closely with late Ahmadu Bello. Many chose to see him as a detribalized Nigerian, He carved his strong character niche right from his days n the civil service where he exhibited upright principles.

He maintains a strong and respectable voice in politics. His strength of character it was that made him almost clinch the chairmanship position of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in year 2000. He looked as good as won until the polls were manipulated to his disfavour. In keeping with his straight principles, Awoniyi had long declared that he has quit politics, although he remains a veritable factor in the polity, especially in what becomes the lot of the north.

He has a good following and also commands some economic strength with his strong investments in the manufacturing sector. No doubt, Awoniyi, a respectable elder statesman, with all his simplicity and principled nature, is one of the influential persons in Nigeria.
