In its bid to ensure a successful and quality conduct of the immunization campaign in the zone, the Sokoto State government has approved N 1.8m to the state Ministry of Health to ensure the success of the 5th round of the national immunization exercise in the state.

Sokoto state Commissioner of health, Alhaji Shehu Hamzat made the disclosure to reporters yesterday in Sokoto. According to him, adequate arrangements have been made to ensure the success of the exercise in the state .

He explained that 23 technical Facilitators had already been trained and deployed to the 23 LGAS in the state for the "Cascade training" of the "real" personnel and to monitor and supervise the conduct of the exercise. "The facilitators include: Ward focal persons, Supervisors, Vaccinators and recorders. Adequate quantity of bundled vaccines were received from the NPHCDA in Abuja", he said. Hamzat added that during the 5th round of the IPDS, children of 0-5 years will be vaccinated against Poliomyelitis, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus and Yellow fever .

"Thus other child survival interventions in form of pluses to attract parents and guardians to bring their children for the vaccination such as soap and paracetamol will be provided," he stressed.

Hamzat said the present administration in the state will give priority to preventive healthcare services in general and immunization activities in particular adding that donor agencies such as WHO, UNICEF, NPHDA will also as usual deploy some consultants to various local councils for the same purpose.

While acknowledging the cost effectiveness of such interventions in reducing child mortality and morbidities in the state, Hamzat therefore called on traditional rulers and community leaders to support the exercise by reaching out to their subjects.
