Residents Intensify Prayers for Rain

This Day
Imam Imam
26 June 2007

For two days, residents of Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, came out in their thousands to offer special prayers for rain.

Traditional and religious leaders, led by the Emir of Gusau, Dr Kabir Danbaba, gathered at the Eid Praying Ground in Gusau metropolis to offer prayers amid rising heat wave and dry wells all over the town.

While neighbouring towns like Katsina and Kaduna, and other states in the country have experienced heavy down pour since the beginning of the year, it rained in Gusau just three times, a development that is delaying farming.

Earlier, Christians converged for prayers for rain in various churches across the town on Sunday.

Speaking at the prayer venue of the prayers, Dr. Danbaba urged residents to dedicate their lives to God and stop all sinful acts capable of drawing the irk of the Almighty.

According to him, it becomes imperative to seek for divine intervention, because farmers have no where to go if the rains do not fall, and life in the ancient town is becoming more and more difficult as a result of drought.

According to him, the situation is so critical, especially since last year's collapse of the Gusau Barrage Dam, which was the main source of potable water in the town.

He called on religious leaders to offer special prayers at their spare times, and urged citizens to shun all acts capable of endangering the peaceful situation in the town. Prayers were also offered in all districts and villages in Gusau Emirate.

In another development, the state government has promised to maintain subsidies on agricultural products, to empower local farmers and increase productivity.

Commissioner-designate and outgoing Permanent Secretary in the state agricultural development programme (ZACAREP), Alhaji Shuaibu Abdulsalam, said this at the opening of a four-day training workshop on Modern Farming Techniques organised for farm extension workers in Gusau yesterday. He said due to high cost of modern farm implements, individual farmers cannot bear the cost of such products.

According to him, all necessary preparations have been concluded for the successful take off of this year's wet season farming, while government has enough fertiliser and chemicals for seed and pests control in stock to ensure a successful farming season.

Abdulsalam said due to the successes recorded in the agric sector in the last eight years, Governor Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi has promised to continue with policy of the previous administration, so as to ensure continuity. About 1200 extension workers, drawn from the 14 local government areas of the state, are taking part in the training programme.

Slighty off topic but pray for the rains in California. The fires have relaxed but let this land absorb the much needed water.

The Governor of Atlanta today got the city involved in a prayer for rain.

Residents are not permitted to water plants or use water for unapproved uses and would be penalized if found violating the present city ordinances.

Some other US States are equally hoping and probably praying for rain, even though these might be in unofficial capacities.
