Reorientation of The Nigerian Mind
| Quote: | | We need to strengthen our National Orientation Agency and begin to orientate our people on the culture of good behavior in Public service. |
This is one of the key areas I'm interested in and have been willing to work on. I have been working towards integrating the "reorientation of the Nigerian mind", in all my projects and dealings with Nigerians, so that we can be better ambassadors of our country.
This is the reason I have made it my personal task to inform and educate people I meet (Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike) whenever I have the opportunity to, through whatever forum or media is available to me, that we as Nigerians need to reorient our thinking; whereby we look at Nigeria as a big picture instead of just thinking of our personal needs and gain, and therefore do what is best for our country, which inherently results in our doing what is best for ourselves on the long run.
Thinking of the greater good of our country, requires the reorientation of the minds of those who (through whatever experiences or exposure in Nigeria) have embraced the selfish attitude of looking out for their selfish needs only, instead of being patriotic and thinking of what is best for our nation.
Also, having a worldview rather than a self-view would go a long way in changing our over criticism of our nation. A simple search on the Internet for instance reveals that Nigerians are the most vocal Africans on the Internet. Unfortunately, we also carry the reputation for self-bashing, whereby we are denigrating and demeaning ourselves and our nation publicly aka airing all our dirty laundry in public. While other nations mostly use the Internet as a tool to get and disseminate information, unfortunately we use it to disgrace ourselves. We need to start looking at the big picture rather than just having a myopic view, especially when it comes to what kind of tool we are using the Internet for, with regards to when it has to do with Nigeria.
Using media forums, TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, the Internet and our very own mouths to encourage our fellow citizens to think good of, and work towards seeking the very best of our country always; instead of just criticizing without tangible solutions and demeaning ourselves and our nations through all available media, will work towards making us a better nation, restore the good image we once had and re-earn us the respect we once had.
Part of this education comes from educating our masses that people elected or selected to work in public or government offices and positions are simply salaried temporary EMPLOYEES who are tasked to do their duties with integrity, and should not be seen or expected to be cash-cows who are obligated to fulfill our financial needs and desires. We should stop seeing political appointees as financial investments who are obligated to dance to our demands. Yes, this may be a subtle practice worldwide, but one that has exaggerated to a level of unmanageable corruption that has damaged Nigeria's image worldwide.
Most of our 130+ million Nigerians should not have to suffer from the acts of the corrupt few, therefore we the masses have to stand up for ourselves, makes our voices heard louder than that of those who give our country a bad reputation. We need to expose our good side more frequently and more effectively through all available channels, so that our positive attributes are better magnified, and recognized by the world as a whole.
This begins with us behaving better, being better ambassadors of our nation and being patriotic to Nigeria. Once we start to recognize our own attributes then we can better appreciate, respect and honour ourselves publicly; which in turn would lead to others recognizing our positive attributes above our negative shortcomings, and thereby respecting and honouring us also.
You and I as citizens of Nigeria can begin to institute the necessary changes beginning today, through our private and public speeches, behavior and association. I hope we'll all begin to heed the call.
