Police Smash Car Snatching Syndicate in Lagos

The Police yesterday smashed an armed robbery gang said to be specialised in the snatching exotic cars in Lagos State. Eight members of the gang were arrested while about five cars were recovered in a garage located in Surulere.
The gang's operations, according to the police also covers Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and Kaduna in search of expensive cars which they sell to unsuspecting members of the public at half its original prize.
Though, the identity of the suspects were not known as at the time this report was filed a source alleged that the 11 suspects are presently detained at the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti Street, Yaba, Lagos, were they are currently being interrogated by a team of crack detectives.
The source said that the suspects were apprehended when they, unknowingly snatched a Toyota Camry car with registration number LB 391 AAA which has a modern vehicle tracking device along Airport Road, Ikeja. In a swift response, a team of policemen attached to the SCID, at the instance of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Operations, Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo, swung into action.
The car, the source added, was trailed to Akerele end of Surulere where four other vehicles, a Mercedes Benz Jeep, an unregistered Audi, a Volkswagen Salon car and a Honda Accord car with No. FJ 306 ABC, were recovered in an automobile workshop at Randle Street, Surulere.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Frank Mba who confirmed the arrest told THISADAY that the case was still being investigated. He, however, revealed that the 11 suspects have made useful statements as regard the identities of their buyers, some of whom includes some notorious automobile dealers.
He further revealed that all the things recovered and the suspects would soon be made known to members of the public. He urged those with expensive cars to install vehicle tracking device in their cars, as this would enable the police recover missing cars on time.
