Plan to Conduct National Tuberculosis Survey
Nigeria Today
28th March'08
Nigeria has announced plans to carry out a National Tuberculosis Survey as part of efforts to check the spread of the disease, which is on the increase in the country.Director-General of the National Institute of Medical Research, Dr. Oni Idigbe, told newsmen in Lagos Thursday the survey would help determine the prevalence rate of the disease in the country. Nigeria has been named as one of the 22 high burden countries in the world and the highest with the cases of Tuberculosis in Africa. Explaining the need for the survey, Idigbe said: ''TB is curable and the treatment is free...If we don't take a step now, it will go out of hand just like HIV/AIDS and it will be difficult to curtail.''
