African chess champion, Nigeria's Pauline Ikpa says her double victory at the 9th All Africa Games in Algiers is the necessary tonic to nourish her ambition for the highest title in the sport.
The ecstatic player, who snatched an individual gold and team bronze medals at the Games, said that having conquered Africa, her next target was to strive towards becoming a "woman grandmaster" in the sport.
"But I have to be exposed to the outside world mainly in Europe, Asia and other continents to achieve this title. Therefore, let me seize this opportunity to call on the private and public sectors to grant me sponsorship to major international competitions. I believe that with the necessary exposure, one can easily acquire more experience and knowledge to conquer not only Africa but the world," she said.
Speaking on why the sport is not so popular in Nigeria, the champion stated that "Chess is an elite game played by people who are exposed and it's not quite spectator friendly where you can cheer players. But it is a game that can be played by both illiterates and uneducated persons. Once you understand it, you can pass on the techniques to others," she said.
The sport which debuted in 2003 All Africa Games in Abuja fetched Team Nigeria three gold and a bronze in Algiers.
