Obasanjo, Mabogunje Insist on Tree Planting

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Prof. Emeritus, Akin Mabogunje have called on governments at all levels to partner with the private sector to enable the country derive maximum benefits from tree planting programme.

Obasanjo and Mabogunje’s position was similar to the submission of the Chairman, Woods, Wood Products and Furniture Sector, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Chief Bisi Rodipe, who said government should create the environment for the private sector to manage the nation’s trees.

The former President and the professor spoke on Wednesday in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, at the first national workshop/crusade on tree planting.
Speaking as the Chairman of the workshop, with the theme, Roadmap to Nigeria becoming forest sustainable nation, Obasanjo said human activities and industrialisation had greatly depleted the natural rain forest in the country.

He said the effect had been rapid deforestation, the devastation of the environment and the alarming rate of flooding and erosion. “Flood and erosion have become more prominent. The rising demand for housing units and new roads will further accelerate deforestation and lead to complete disappearance of rainforest,” he said.

Obasanjo, who said he had planted about 2.5 million trees, said deforestation was reported to be responsible for 20 percent of global climate change.
