Customs Area Comptroller (CAC), Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone 'A', Lagos, Mr Rasheed Taiwo, has warned smugglers across Nigerian borders, that his Command would leave no stone unturned in suppressing smuggling and plugging all revenue leakages.
Taiwo, while showing mediamen seized smuggled goods valued at about N87.2 million at the FOU's Warehouse, Ikeja, yesterday, promised that smugglers would not only get their goods confiscated, but would also be made to face the wrath of the law.
He said "the fight against smuggling would not end at confiscating of goods, all those involved would be made to face the music. We will ensure they get their freedom restricted. We will fight them to the last. Lagos and its adjoining states, being the huge economic hub of the Nigerian State remain a sore taste in the economic growth efforts in terms of smuggling activities.
"Since my arrival, I have overhauled the entire Command and control disposition of anti-smuggling operations for greater results. I have combined and adopted both intelligence and blitzkrieg strategies in my operational plans and tactics to put a check to these economic saboteurs and their nefarious activities," he said.
In all, Taiwo confirmed the arrest of seven people suspected to be involved in the smuggling of the goods, who he said would be charged to court immediately. The CAC gave the list of good seized as 94 units of various types of vehicles, 450 bags of parboiled rice, 173 bales of second-hand clothings, 20,142 pieces and 269 bundles of textile materials, 293 cartons of ecolac boxes, and 119 cartons of frozen turkey. Others included 120 cartons of pear/apple fruits, 1,200 pieces of shovels, 121 cartons of breakable plates and 40 cartons of trays.
