Nigeria's Zinox, Reltel Team to Offer Laptop, Net Bundle

29th April '08

For the first time in the history of ICT in Nigeria, two indigenous firms, Zinox Computers, a computer manufacturer, and CDMA telecom operator Reltel Wireless are joining forces to provide Nigerians with Internet-ready PCs. The partnership will spur ICT penetration beyond the use of PC applications, said Zinox Chairman Leo-Stan Ekeh and Reltel CEO Ken Aigbinode.

The vendors will spur use of ICT "by bringing the world of the Internet to the rooms of buyers into the scheme," Ekeh said. He also said that Zinox is introducing its brand of laptops at a discounted price of 89,500 naira (US$763), while Reltel's contribution would be the provision of Internet access to buyers at the much-subsidized rate of 10,000 naira per month.

The rates compare to competition that offers Internet access at 16,000 naira. The deal, tagged the "Digital Power Project," would last for one month, starting May 1, and comes with training on how to optimize the PC. Training sponsored by Microsoft and Intel can be obtained through vouchers issued for every Zinox laptop bought. "The training can be undergone at Zinox-designated centers, namely AfriHub, Debis and New Horizons nationwide, or the buyer may attend any training center of his or her choice and Zinox would pay," Ekeh said. The concept, Ekeh pointed out, is not just to generate sales, but to aid buyers in getting on board the Information Society via Internet usage.

The partnership, he added, is part of the two firms' contribution toward President Musa Yar'Adua's Vision 2020 strategy. "The Digital Power Project has been designed to enable consumers to fully exploit the benefits of mobile technology. Nigerians can now work or play in the office, at home or while on the move," Ekeh said. "The synergies from Reltel's efficient technology and Zinox's leadership in the Information Technology (IT) industry will translate into affordable connectivity for Nigerians," Aigbinode assured.
