Nafdac to Partner NAN - Akunyili
Leadership
1st Feb. 2008
Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Dora Akunyili, yesterday in Abuja said the agency would partner with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to safeguard the health of Nigerians. Akunyili said this when she visited Mrs Oluremi Oyo, Managing Director of NAN. She said as government establishments meant to serve the interest of the public, it was necessary for both organisations to work closely with each other.
"We will continue to identify with you in ensuring the health and well-being of Nigerians," she said. The NAFDAC DG commended Oyo for her commitment toward taking NAN to greater height, saying 'Oyo is endowed with the wisdom from God'. She, however, noted that like NAN, NAFDAC required improved funding to establish its offices at the grassroots, where its activities were also required. "NAFDAC and NAN have many things in common but lack of funds has not enabled NAFDAC to open rural offices like NAN and it is in the rural areas that hair-raising issues happen," she said.
Earlier, Oyo had told Akunyili that NAN had actively engaged itself in the dissemination of information, not just from the cities but also from every nook and cranny of the country and outside. "We cover events in the country and the ECOWAS countries in a bid to integrate the region. "We have offices in the 36 states of the federation with 12 rural offices which we intend increasing to 40 because we believe that the story is in the rural areas.
"There are so many Nigerians who are affected by policies taken in Abuja. With this we believe we can carve a niche for ourselves and also help government in the development of our country", Oyo said.
