NDLEA Destroys Six Tons of Narcotics in Minna
This Day
14 Aug. 2008
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has publicly set ablaze six metric tons or 6,000 kilogrammes of narcotic and psychotropic substances in Minna, the capital of Niger State . Leading the Executive Governor of the State, Babangida Aliyu and other dignitaries to burn the drugs on Tuesday , Chairman/Chief Executive of the Agency , Ahmadu Giade said that the burning exercise for seized drug exhibits symbolizes absolute victory for humanity and a demonstration of the superiority of the State over organised crime and criminality.
According to Giade, the victory was not without some sacrifices as officers had to spend sleepless nights and invest financial as well as material resources in order to track down drug dealers. In all, a total of 6,000 kilogrammes which is 6 metric tons of narcotic drugs and related substances were publicly set ablaze.
The bulk of the drugs, about 5,993.404 kilogrammes, is Cannabis commonly referred to as marijuana or Indian hemp. This represents 99.88 percent of the total seizures burnt while psychotropic substances accounts for 7 kilogrammes (about 0.12 percent of the seizure).
The NDLEA boss disclosed that concrete and far reaching measures had been taken to halt the spread of Cannabis which is the most widely cultivated, trafficked and abused drug in the country. This situation, he observed , reflects the sharp disparity in the quantity of drugs where cannabis far outweighs other seizures made by the Agency.
"Identifying and seizing large consignments of illicit narcotic drugs before they get to the innocent victims is our desire and ultimate goal; and the numerous seizures made across the country are obvious evidences of our commitment to make the country drug free," Giade stated.
This is the second time the Command will burn drug exhibits since its creation in 2003. The first burning exercise took place in February 2006 where 2,449.55 kilogrammes was burnt.
