Life Unstarted

When our loved ones pass at tender ages we tend to feel like they were snatched away too early. I'm not speaking of family members who live for over 90 years, yet newspaper adverts state that they were snatched by the hands or jaws of death.

Understandably, the love we have for our loved ones is the reason why we mourn and grieve and wish they could have been with us longer. Those who truly accept and acknowledge that 'death is the end of our life's cycle' can truly understand and accept that there comes a time when mourning should be cut short or when jubilation should be the order of the day, as in one's Grandfather or great-Grandfather passing away at the age of 95. Such has already lived a full life and hopefully accomplished the purpose which God destined for him or her here on earth.

When those who seem to have just begun asserting their lives pass away, it is usually quite painful, but when those who have not even had the opportunity to set their feet on the ground, let alone walk the face of the earth pass away, then it can truly be devastating. Such is the case of babies and toddlers, moreso on the babies.

Since salvation cannot be gained on behalf of another, "Where then do the souls of babies and toddlers go?" Moreso, "Where do the souls of 'Miscarried Babies', Aborted Babies' and 'Sickly Babies' who die at, or after birth go?"

I have actually considered this question quite a lot. Traditionally, in Hebrew culture, a child became responsible for himself at age 12, hence the celebration of the bar mitzvah. Prior to that, parents were responsible. Children are under the headship of their parents until the coming of age. That is also why we have this idea of the "age of innocence."

But the Bible clearly states that we are sinful from the moment of conception, that we are born under Adam, born sinful, and deserve to die. The penalty of sin is still death. We have imputed sin from Adam even before we've had a chance to lie, cheat or steal.

I guess I used to take this question for granted, but then one day it dawned on me. I was thinking about all the aborted babies. And I suddenly thought, if babies go to heaven, why would Satan so earnestly promote abortion in the hearts of people? Merely to bring a spirit of murder into the land? It doesn't make sense. We know from the Bible that Satan hates us because God loves us and because we were made in God's image. In the same way that God doesn't want anyone to perish, Satan wants EVERYONE to perish. Just knowing the hatefulness of Satan, I know he would never willingly allow someone to go to heaven who would otherwise perish.

Basically, if babies went to heaven, Satan wouldn't be so earnestly in support of abortion. If you think about it, the vast majority of the babies, if they were able to live their lives, would never come to walk the straight and narrow. They wouldn't choose God, and their lives would be subject to Satan's torture. But if the babies don't go to heaven, that's all the more reason for Satan to really really fight for abortions to be legal. Kill the babies before any of them have a chance to serve God. Doesn't that sound like the kind of diabolical plan that Satan would greatly enjoy?

It makes me sick. The truth is so hard to face- and we don't know for sure. But I can tell you one thing: A LOT of Christians are apathetic about the abortion issue because they mistakenly believe that babies go to heaven. Satan is snatching these babies and Christians are doing nothing about it because they are too weak-minded to accept the possibility that babies are not considered innocent by God. But the Bible makes it clear
that we are not innocent, even as babies.

There are only two exceptions that I can see. I don't necessarily think that all babies are condemned. First of all, God still sees the heart and He's able to know what the child would have done if it had been allowed to live. And secondly, there is some evidence to say that when a child is under the headship of a parent, the parents' standing with God has an impact. Sort of like when we stand under Christ. God sees us through Christ's perfection, not by our own works but by grace in Christ. I think children can be under the headship of their parents in the same way until they come of age and choose for themselves.

It's not the same as gaining salvation through someone else. Parents are held responsible for their children. If they don't know the Lord, who's fault is it for not teaching them?
The Bible says that parents ought to teach their children to walk in the ways of the Lord, to teach their children His commandments and right and wrong. I think parents are held responsible to a certain extent. And I also think that it is possible that miscarried and sick or premature babies who die whose parents have a right standing with God in Christ are accepted into heaven because they are still under that headship.

The real truth is that we cannot know for certain Biblically. But God can tell us about individuals. (And one time, God did tell me that a baby was in His hands in heaven. He gave me a vision, which I painted, to pass onto the grieving parents, as a comfort to them. It took me awhile to get it to look like my vision, but I did get it just right, and they said that the baby looked just like their baby!)

While we may never know for certain where these babies go, I don't think we should easily assume that the aborted ones goes to hell. In the first place their parents, not the babies made the decision to be aborted. The sin therefore can only be considered the parents'. The babies did not asked to be conceived let alone aborted, so why should they carry the burden of that guilt.

A child conceived has a soul, so the worst case scenario that may ascribe any blame may be that of some miscarried babies, we may rightly or wrongly assume that maybe the baby was miscarried due to incomplete formation or out of choice as 'some' people who believe babies who are continuously miscarried do.

This belief is why 'some' parents who conceive babies that continuously die at birth sometimes put markings on them to see if the baby returns after a/or subsequent conceptions with the same markings. In Nigeria for instance, such babies are called "Abiku" i.e. "a baby or child who dies early only to return." These type of babies are believed to be tormentors and causes of sorrow for their parents. I suppose for those who believe in reincarnation, this is solid proof.

Therefore in the case of aborted babies, regardless of whether they were born into a life of sin, I can only believe they should not be judged until they have actually had the opportunity to be sinners. As in the case of adults, there is a separation between "thinking of" and "actually committing" sin.

Yes, God knows the thoughts of our hearts, but He simply does not judge nor condemn us solely on thoughts. This is the reason we have the power of choice to decide on whether to act on such thoughts or not. This is also why we have the Holy Spirit to convict us through our inner man, so we may be deterred form committing the sinful thoughts of our hearts. If we still choose to act on them, then we have actually sinned. I believe the same applies to these babies, regardless of whether they are miscarried, aborted, sickly or simply died young.

I am not an authority on this as none of us still alive have ever been in heaven or hell (not hell on earth) to actually witness where such babies who die young go.

On the other hand, of course satan would rejoice in the reduction of souls to serve and worship God, not to say all the babies that could have lived actually would, but his sinful thoughts are placed in the hearts of the parents who abort for whatever reasons, although some babies are actually aborted to save their parents' lives, e.g., ectopic and similarly endangering pregnancies. The mother whose life is saved can live to have another child. As for the babies who are miscarried or sickly, the parents cannot be held responsible; and for babies who dies due to acts of murder, carelessness, suffocation, crib death, etc., one cannot ascribe blame to the babies either.

Yes, we are all born with sin. The thing to remember is that God has chosen to forgive the sins of children. Therefore, all children will enter heaven through God's divine mercy and grace. Satan cannot gain their souls, but his objective may be to gain the souls of those who disregard life. Let us pray that God may open the hearts of those who fail to value life including their own. Let us pray that they will realize that this unpleasing to God and that they humbly come before God and repent. Let us pray that they will embrace and protect all life--unborn and born alike. Remember God cries for the victim and the victimizer. Let us pray for the children and for those who harm them.

Peace of God be with you!
