The Lagos State Government is to procure additional 100 new compactors to further boost Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) operations in order to combat refuse related problems in the state. The state Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Muiz Banire disclosed this in his address, at an organized Private Sector's interactive forum organized by the Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association at the weekend.
According to Banire the move to procure more 100 compactors which would arrive the country in April next year, was to further strengthen waste management efforts of the state government as well as to rid the metropolis of all forms of environmental nuisances in order to achieve efficiency in the management of solid waste. He noted that about 450 compacting trucks would be required to do the job considering the tonnage of refuse generated daily in the state but added that the state government with its meager allocation could not afford to procure them at once. The Transfer loading stations/trucks, and the compactors when they arrive, would help to reduce traffic congestion as well as eliminate the deficiency associated with open and rickety trucks been used by a few of the PSP operators.
The commissioner further explained that both the compactors and transfer loading stations would be of immense benefits to members of the public as well as the operators. He listed other advantages which include increase in efficiency of waste disposal, more refuse to be disposed at the dumpsites as well as reduce traffic congestion in the metropolis and improve the condition of the dumpsites. Banire noted that the daily uncontrollable influx of people to the state has exerted great pressure on the infrastructure of the state, thereby forcing the state government to contend with a lot of environmental challenges.
