Incessant Suffering

Why is it that no matter what some people do, they never receive apparent mercy or favour from God?

Since God has dominion over all things, people and spirits created and existing; and since absolutely NOTHING happens without His consent or permission (direct or permissive will); why do good people , who are 'God fearing' and faithful to God suffer incessantly and mercilessly at the hands of evil people and their wicked devices, including the employment of evil spirits?

Perhaps their real reward is in heaven...God never told us that we would be happy and have great lives. Only we have said that...our job is about honoring God and keeping his commandments no matter how bad our life might seem. Sometimes he is using us as an instrument to help someone else.
