The University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gwagwalada, yesterday burnt expired drugs worth N471,000. The drugs were destroyed at the premises of the hospital and the exercise was witnessed by the National Agency for food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the expired drugs along with other consumables were stored between 2004 and 2006.
The chairman, medical advisory committee and head, clinical services in the hospital, Dr Titus Ameh, said most of the items were those donated to the hospital. Ameh said they were donated by the State House Clinic as well as other hospitals and organisations.
He added that the hospital had put measures in place to prevent the administration of expired and adulterated drugs to patients.
He said NAFDAC was invited in view of its mandate and to forge partnership with it in order to sensitise Nigerians on fake drugs. Head of NAFDAC in Abuja, Mr Bolanrinwa Yusuf, commended the hospital's effort and assured it of the agency's support in the fight against fake drugs.
Dr Nandul Durfa, the hospital's Chief Medical Director, said similar events were organised in the past to mobilise staff against the menace of fake drugs.
