Homosexual Pastor on the Run
Vanguard
Ebun Babalola
20 September 2008
Church and residence locked up.
Reverend Rowland made news recently as the gay pastor of a church called House of Rainbow situated at No 36/38 Yakoyo street, Ojodu Berger, Lagos. Reverend Roland some time ago reportedly appeared on Cable Network News, CNN, where he proudly talked about his church of gays.
The initial reaction about his exposure was that such a church could not exist within Nigeria as such things are common outside the country.
But an uproar in the Anglican communion in Europe on gay bishops brought up the case of Reverend Roland who is Nigerian, resides in Lagos and operates his gay church in Lagos. Indeed, the whole story is now telling on the entire Christian body in Nigeria and raises more questions about the activities of self-acclaimed men of God.
When Saturday Vanguard visited plot 145 flat 1, Jakande Estate, Isolo, Lagos, where Rev. Rowland Olajide Macaulay, the gay pastor lives, the apartment was locked. It was learnt that the reverend had left his house on Saturday September 13, immediately after a national Newspaper carried the story of his homosexual church.
According to the neighbours, the Sunday service was unable to hold both at Jakande Estate branch and the Ojodu headquarters of House of Rainbow Ministries. Efforts to know whether anyone knows his whereabout proved abortive.
Asked to give a vivid description of Rev. Rowland, one of the neighbours, a woman selling cooked rice in-front of the house said, "We cannot tell you who the man is because he doesn't come out anyhow. He comes out and goes in on his own but the only thing he does, is just to greet us and that is all. Although, he has been living in this place for close to two years now, but I don't think he has a friend in this place and whenever he is going out, he is always with red cap. He plays with us sometimes but not on regular basis, he does things at his own pace."
Saturday Vanguard also asked other neighbours if there is anyone who could possibly give an account of Rev. Rowland, the gay pastor. All what they could say was that, "We don't know, if the man has a wife because we have not seen any woman with him before. He is always in the house with other men, maybe because, they also use his residence as a place of worship".
Although, the man was not there at the time of visit but in-front of his flat, there was a white bus which indicates the church symbols, "Would Jesus Discriminate"I John 4 vs 18. There are also some bathroom slippers at the door-step indicating that people are living there. The question that comes to mind, is why doesn't anyone know anything about him.
The quest to get details about the man also took Saturday Vanguard, to the Ojodu Berger premises of the House of Rainbow church, where the gay pastor and his members worship. There was nothing to identify that such activity goes on there because the whole place was totally empty. From the gate, one does not need anyone to tell him that the place is temporarily out of service.
Some neighbours revealed that the place, was established since 1994 and it is used as a Theology school. Saturday Vanguard also gathered that the owner of the place, Prof. Augustus Olakunle Macaulay of the Theology school, "United Bible University" situated at No. 36/38 Yakoyo street, Ojodu Berger, Lagos, is the father of the gay pastor. He has also worked as a lecturer at the University of Lagos before retiring to his Theology business. Amazingly no one knows whether such practice takes place in that premises.
There is a signboard of another church, Christian Pentecostal Mission, (CPM) in the same premises and this is the only church that is well known to all the people in that neighbourhood that is having its fellowship in that premises. According to them, "The only church that fellowship there is the Christian Pentecostal Mission, and they do have their programmes according to the pattern of the church. They also have some members around this place but if you now say that there is another church that worship here apart from CPM, well, we don't know anything about that."
An experience with a journalist revealed that the gays' worship centre is shrouded in secrecy and locating it took several weeks of investigation
The church name is nowhere written in any part of the premises but it is only known to those who attend the place.
According to our investigation, the House of Rainbow is an exclusive church where all the members could only come through introduction by another member. Instead of the normal Sunday service which comes up in the morning in other churches, the House of Rainbow holds its service around 4.00 pm, while the church premises is locked to keep away unwanted intruders.
Apart from the fact that the premises was locked to intruders, the look of the security guards with their green uniforms at the entrance of the church is another issue. At present, the Reverend is no where to be found and all efforts to get him on phone proved abortive.
Rev. David Moomo, Translation Consultant, Bible Society of Nigeria
The criminal code of Nigerian Constitution, says anyone who practises such act should be sentenced to 14 years imprisonment. Anyone who practises gay is not created gay, he chose to be gay. The Bible is very rich because it commanded that such an individual should be stoned to death in the Mosaic law and that was what the Shariah law followed. It is morally wrong, it is something, anyone who practises it cannot make it public. Those who did it in those days will not allow anyone to see them, because he or she would be killed.
Therefore, the stand of Bible Society of Nigeria on this is that, it is naturally illegal, it is nationally criminalised and spiritually uncondolable because it is like condoling lawlessness. So, there is need for everybody to shout it out that gay, lesbianism, and all what not, is just the beginning of the destroying of the fabric of our heritage. It is not our heritage. If you don't want to marry, don't marry, if you are a man, marry your opposite sex. It is morally wrong, criminalised in the Nigerian legal system, in the criminal code and every code of the country. It is spiritually unpardonable that was why God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and brimstone.
We are custodian of the Bible, the word of God. It was for this that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and God's standard does not change. With him, there is no shadow of change. Apart from the fact that it is criminalised in our legal system, it is against our moral heritage as Nigerians. Let nobody say that he was created with this vices. God loves sinners but hates sin, We call such people to deliverance.
There is no way they can continue in such sins and want brethren to accept them as fellow believers. No sinner is part of God's kingdom. Here in Nigeria, we can not, will not, must not allow this decadence to see the light of day. We have enough sins we are asking God to forgive us and renew us about rather than, adding these vices.
"God's word does not encourage homosexualism" - BSN
"The church is satanic" - CAN Scribe
Secretary Geneneral of Christian Association of Nigeria CAN, Engr. Samuel Salifi said: The church in question can only be satanic and when I say it is Satanic, it simply means that Satan is working through those individuals and they know that their deeds are evil. Most of them purported to be doing what they profess as gay practise in the name of a church know for a fact that they are doing a wrong thing.
Otherwise, why are they hiding their practises. Why are they frisking people who want to attend their services? Sodomy is in the Holy Bible and we are told that God punished them for it. Why should anyone with his right mind senses wants to import such unholy practise to Nigeria? What do they stand to gain? Knowing fully well that what they are doing is sin against God.
"It cannot be a church" - Archbishop Ademowo
Anglican Archbishop Ademowo of Ecclesiastics Council of Lagos and the Bishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Ephrahim Adebola Ademowo expressed shock over the description of the place as a church because according to him, a church is an assembly of godly people who are spirit filled and who congregate to worship the Almighty God. So, if there is any place where God is not glorified such a place cannot be described as a church. At best you can describe such a place as a cult. A church as far as you and I know, is a place where everybody is free to go and worship God without hindrance.
"Christians will move against them” - Makinde
Prelate Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Sunday Ola Makinde, simply described the act as a abomination. According to him, it is a altar disgrace to the Anglican primate, Most Rev. Peter Jasper Akinola as someone who has been fighting against the unholy practise in the Western world. It is a same that it can never gain its ugly head in the Nigerian stories.
But, I am happy at one thing and that is that by the latest report, they are now ashamed of themselves and have gone under. That kind of madness cannot and will not be allowed to thrive here in Nigeria. That place cannot be described as a church and you can be sure that it cannot be registered by the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, because they are not Christians as they claim. They Bible is clear on those who profess to be disciplines of Christ.
"We are in search of homosexual pastors" - Frank Mba, PRO Nigerian Police, Lagos branch
The Police stand in this case is simple. The truth is that the constitution of the country does not in anyway support any act of homosexuality because it is an offence under the criminal law and unnatural offence. The truth is that most of these offences are unnatural and in most cases, the Nigerian Police need the collaboration of the everybody to tackle the problem. Most of the time, the practise is done in the hidden, it is difficult to deal with because one needs a warrant to prove the case.
These are offences that are committed because there is nobody to talk about it, It is when the other party is forced against his which that everybody will see it as something to deal with But all the same, we are not happy with it, we are totally pursuing this case and we tend to bring such act to book. Anyone who is practising such is not helping the culture of the country which we are all in. We are in search for those kind of people and we promise that they will not go free.
The constitution of the country is totally against gay or lesbianism and we will not fold our arms on this case. The man is said to be on the run but I tell you that all hands are on deck to fish him out.
"It's an abomination" - Rev Jemigbon
The President of Lagos and Western Northern Areas(LAWNA) of the Apostolic Church, Pastor Samuel Sunday Jemigbon also described the act as an abomination that should be roundly condemned by all and sundry.
The bible is unambiguous about such issues. It is an abomination to God. The Apostolic Church is not involved in such unholy practises because we believe that the Church is the body of Christ. Any church that profess such satanic doctrine needs to be checked if the leaders of the so called church are of sound mind.
Conversation with Prof. Augustus Olakunle Macaulay, father of Rev. Rowland Olajide Macaulay and owner of the United Bible University
Professor Alexander Olakunle Macaulay is the father and the owner of the premises where the gay people do have their worship. But as at the time of investigation, he was said to be in Akwa Ibom state for his official duty. Effort was made to track him down on his involvement as a landlord of the apartment where the gay worship as he was put on a telephone conversation on the basis that the reporter was also looking for a place of worship for the members of her church and this is how the conversation went:
Reporter: Good evening sir,
Prof Alexander: Good evening
Reporter: My name is Ebun
Prof: How can I help you
Reporter: I am calling on behalf of my church. We need a place where we can be worship as a branch church
Prof: How did you get to know Ojudu?
Reporter: I got your number from a friend who has had an encounter with you before and I told him that I needed a place for my church members as worship centre. I am the secretary of the church and my pastor was the one who directed me to go ahead and get a place, so I discussed with him, and he told me to try and go to your place at Ojudu and it’s possibly for you to help. I guessed he has lived in that place before.
Prof: Hey, Hey
Reporter: Yes
Prof: Well, at the moment, I am not at home, I am not in Lagos right now, the only person you can talk to is my lawyer because he is in-charge of that place right now but she cannot do anything until I come back to Lagos. You can call back between 26th and 27th of this month.
