Henceforth, any trader found hawking goods along Mile12-Ikorodu Road, Lagos, risks one year jail term or N25,000 fine. The Special Adviser to the State Governor on Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, who announced the penalty in Lagos, said trading and hawking were prohibited along the road, to ensure unfettered operation for its Bus Rapid Transit scheme due to commence on March 17.
The state government has designated the entire stretch of the road from Ikorodu road to CMS as BRT route. Opeifa also said hanging on the tailboard of all commuter buses, including Molue and Danfo, by conductors had been prohibited.
He spoke at a press conference at Alausa, the state government secretariat in company with the Managing Director, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Dr. Dayo Mobereola. According to Opeifa, “The walkway/sidewalks should, at all times, be free of all encumbrances. Anyone who fails to comply with any of the provisions of this regulation commits an offence and he is liable on conviction to imprisonment for one month or a fine of N25,000.”
He warned operators of commuter buses to stay away from the BRT lane and the main carriageway so as not to incur the wrath of the government. He, however, reiterated that the BRT scheme was not introduced to replace the existing transport system; rather, he said, it is meant to augment and ease the problem of shortage of decent buses facing commuters in the state.
