Good Friend

A simple friend, when visiting, acts like a guest. A real friend opens your refrigerator and helps himself.

A simple friend has never seen you cry. A real friend has shoulders soggy from your tears.

A simple friend doesn't know your parents' first names. A real friend has their phone numbers in his address book.

A simple friend brings a bottle of wine to your party. A real friend comes early to help you cook and stays late to help you clean.

A simple friend hates it when you call after he has gone to bed. A real friend asks you why you took so long to call.

A simple friend seeks to talk with you about your problems. A real friend seeks to help you with your problems.

A simple friend wonders about your romantic history. A real friend could blackmail you with it, [but won't].

A simple friend thinks the friendship is over when you have an argument.
A real friend calls you after you had a fight.

A simple friend expects you to always be there for them. A real friend expects to always be there for you!

A True Friend

A simple friend is simply interested in the activities your share. A true friend makes the effort to know or understand you.

A simple friend shares only your interests. A true friend shares your morals and values.

A simple friend promises to visit you when you are bereaved or simply sorrowful, but doesn't. A true friend shows up to console you without asking permission.

A simple friend feigns concern by asking what you need in time of need without any follow-through. A true friend listens to you, assesses your need and actually shows up with what they have ascertained. A shoulder to lean on, prayers, a ride, companionship, material or other needs.

A simple friend borrows stuff from you and never returns them. A true friend knows better than to try and covet what is not theirs.

A simple friend wants to know all about you without reciprocating. A true friend knows friendship is all about reciprocating.

A simple friend will occasionally (or probably often) gossip about you. A true friend knows never to betray your trust and trusts you too.

A simple friend may find your mate attractive and act on it. A true friend will never cross the relationship barrier.

A simple friend will lie to you. A true friend is honest with you.

A simple friend competes with you. A true friend respects and is secure about your differences.
