Fixing Nigeria: How Do We Start?

I believe one of the first and probably biggest step to enacting an effective turnaround is by instilling a sense of patriotism in our fellow Nigerians, especially the youth as they will be easier to train than adults who may exhibit resistance to changes.

A minute percentage of the population is responsible for this cancer which has gotten Nigeria the reputation it has worldwide, and unfortunately, these are the ones the media exploit to brand Nigeria and Nigerians with a bad reputation, despite the fact that every country trumpeting Nigeria's ills likewise have their own considerable shares. Unfortunately, some of we Nigerians are ourselves experts at grinding the negative rumour mills.

I believe it is time we take a different approach and one that definitely works for foreign countries, which is accentuating our positive, so that the higher percentage of what Nigeria and Nigerians are truly about becomes what is trumpeted about us, within and especially outside Nigeria.

This is the main reason I started NaijaPositive a forum site to highlight the positive attributes of Nigeria 7 years ago. It's been a longterm effort, which I had to restore last year, but I know eventually, people's eyes and minds can be trained to look for positive rather than negative attributes of situations and things.

When we Nigerians begin to really take pride in our country, irrespective of its shortcomings, recognizing that we are indeed blessed and need to contribute towards the progress of our own country, instead of exhibiting colonial mentality and believing everything foreign is superior, or migrating all our resources (including human resources) abroad, then we will begin to shed the negative behaviours that have scarred our reputation abroad, and instead accentuate and defend our positive attributes worldwide.

This is an interesting perspective on engendering change in the Nation. Working within to create a change without!
At some point, we have to return to the basics... No real change can occur in the environment, if the mind of the man does not change first!
