FRSC Bans Right-hand Vehicles
Tope Abiola
13th April 2007
Authoroties of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) have prohibited the use of right hand steering vehicles on Nigerian roads. A release signed by the Chief Route Commander and Zonal Head of Public Enlightenment, Zone 2, stated that "no motor should be registered or driven on any public road, if the steering apparatus of the vehicle was fitted on the right hand side of the vehicles."
The release said that "the zonal commanding officer had observed that over 35 years of the prohibition of the right hand drive vehicles into Nigeria, such vehicles still operate with impunity to the chargrin of the law abiding citizens and a mockery of the traffic regulations."
The Zonal Commanding Officer, Mr. A.A. Abu, appealed to the various states Motor Licencing Authorities to prohibit the registration of or further licencing of such vehicles for any particular mode of usage in the country. He also appealed to other law enforcement agencies to assist the FRSC in arresting and prosecuting violators of the order.
