Demolition - FCDA to Obey President's Directive

In line with President Umaru Yar'Adua's renewed directive to the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), that demolition of any structure in the Territory be stopped, FCT administration has said the directive will be obeyed and all planned demolition is suspended. Yar'Adua had on Monday, directed that henceforth, demolition of houses in the FCT must be done with a human face, and with utmost respect to the rule of law.
But barely 24 hours later, Chairman of the FCDA Transition Committee, Engineer Mohammed Alhassan, said the exercise would continue, because it was part of the overall development of the Territory. He had however, accepted that "due process will be followed in the exercise," adding [that he] gave three months notice to defaulters whose buildings have been marked illegal. But in an apparent change of mind, Alhassan has ordered that the demolitions be discontinued. In a news release made available to THISDAY, Alhassan stated that "the President's directive is unambiguous and does not discriminate. He has directed that demolition of houses be suspended until a new Minister is appointed."
He said as law-abiding civil servants of this country, no demolition would take place until there is another directive for such and cautioned that the President's directive should not be taken for granted. He urged residents of the FCT not to take the directive as a licence to alter the Abuja Master-plan, as such will incur the wrath of the authorities.
