Darfur: Sudan Happy with Conduct of Nigerian Troops
Agency Reporter
8th Feb 2008
The Chief of Joint Staff of he Sudanese Armed Forces, Gen. Ahman El-Jaili, on Wednesday in Khartoum said Sudan was happy with the conduct of the Nigerian troops in the Darfur Region. El-Jaili made the commendation in his office when the Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Luka Yusuf, paid him a courtesy visit.
“I am impressed with the behaviour of the Nigerian troops assisting in the ongoing peace process in Darfur. “Your officers and soldiers are good ambassadors of the Nigerian Armed Forces, that is why the Sudanese government wants your continued support in the Darfur,” he said.
El-Jaili said he had not received any report of bad conduct by any member of the Nigerian contingent since their arrival six years ago.
He said that Nigerian troops had a crucial role to play in the ongoing peace process in the war-torn region especially in the delivery of humanitarian aid. He stressed the need for continued cooperation between Nigeria and the Sudan, whom he said shared many things in common.
The Defence chief said the situation in the region was being exxagerated by NGOs and the foreign media explaining that the Sudanese military had not fired a single shot in the region in the last one year.“I want the NGOs and the foreign media to always cross check their facts. They should get correct information about the region in particular and the country in general to avoid misinfor-mation and confusion,” he said.
Speaking earlier, Yusuf assured the Sudanese government that Nigeria
would continue to support the peace process in Darfur. He added that the Nigerian troops would be adequately equipped to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.
“Nigerian troops are in Darfur to assist humanity. Our prayer is that peace will return to the region as soon as possible,” Yusuf said. He said he was in Sudan to inspect, interact and boost the morale of his 3, 000 troops deployed under the AU-UN Mission.
