CNN Apologises to Atiku

20/1/2008

Cable News Network (CNN) has reportedly apologised to former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku over a telecast in which he reported to have been indicted on corruption charges.

In a letter by Vice President and Associate General Counsel David Vigilante of the broadcast media made available to The Nation by media officials of the former Vice President, CNN stated that it failed to include in its report that the charges were subsequently dismissed.

Full text of the letter read:

"In a story in our December 8, 2007 telecast concerning corruption in Africa, it was reported that former Nigerian Vice President Abubakar was indicted on corruption charges by Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Not included in that report was the fact that a Nigerian court subsequently dismissed the charges, finding that the charges were unfairly pursued against Mr. Abubakar and also noting that they were "grossly unconstitutional" and a "deliberate usurpation of the judicial power." According to his attorney, there are no indictments pending against Mr. Abubakar in any jurisdiction.

Very typical of the foreign press, especially US media. Throw stones first and only IF caught, search for and pretend to aid the victims later.
