Asubeb Spends N111 Million On Schools

Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) says it has spent the sum of N111 million so far on the provision of basic infrastructure, teaching aides and other instructional materials on primary schools in the State. A break down of the sum shows that N18 million was spent on a home grown school feeding project for a 22, 000 pupils for 24 days while the N59 million and N320 million were spent on Education Trust Fund Projects respectively.

According to the Executive Chairman of the Board, Chief Chuma Mbonu, who spoke with reporters in Awka over the weekend, the funds were aimed at improving the quality of primary school education in the state. Mbonu however noted that though funds were inadequate in view of the multiplicity of issues waiting for urgent attention, the board has been able to spread its tentacles across the rural areas.

He dismissed claims that the projects were not being given the statutory geographical spread, insisting that the projects were taken to the three senatorial zones in the state.

Mbonu reiterated the policy of ASUBEB, which is aimed at ensuring balance in the distribution and provision of infrastructure to schools in the state, adding that primary education is the cradle of effective child socialization.

While lamenting that some proprietors and heads of some primary schools in the state have displayed attitudes that have been counter productive to government's policy of improving primary education in the state, Mbonu also warned that the board would not take kindly to what he called laxity and lack of commitment among heads of the schools.
